I have recently been putting together a workbook for a workshop I was co-hosting with a writer. Unfortunately it got cancelled. Half of the session would have been about writing a story and the other half about illustrating the story. The teacher in me loves coming up with content for these workshops. We start out simple and build upon that to help ease students into a final piece.
I like to start out my kids drawing workshops with giving them a simple shape and seeing what the can make with it. There is a school of thought says this method doesn’t help children to develop their own drawing skills or learn the art making process, but I disagree. By giving children a shape to start with; it takes away the fear of not knowing how to begin. A lot of creativity happens after a few tries. I’ve seen it in my past workshops and was always in awe of what these children came up with.
Next time you're not sure what to draw in your sketchbook, try creating a character out of a circle, square, rectangle, half circle or triangle!
Best,
Denise
Great idea! I definitely disagree, like you, with the opinion that it doesn't help develop drawing skills. I think it actually helps to prompt the imagination to get to work dreaming about what that shape could be. Thanks for sharing Denise
